The Pupils’ Shelter was built in 1908 in the courtyard of the Palilula Primary School in Belgrade, and Nikola Spasić himself paid all the costs of maintenance and of housing for poor pupils.
The Home for Infirm Citizens in Knjaževac, with 36 beds, was erected from funds that the Belgrade merchant Nikola S. Spasić bequeathed in his will for the building of hospitals and of one home for “poor and infirm Serbian citizens”. The solemn opening of the Home took place on 26 May 1935. The first residents entered the Home on 25 July 1935.
The Home operated until 1945, when, because of wartime destruction and needs, it became a State Children’s Home adapted for the reception of children who had lost their parents in the war.
Over the years the Home changed its purpose, was reconstructed and its capacity expanded. Today it houses a Gerontology Centre.
